Tandem supports coaches and athletes

to succeed together

Tandem is based on extensive sport psychology research at Loughborough University.

Tandem is a powerful relationship tool that assesses the quality and effectiveness of relationships between coaches and athletes. The tool aims to help identify vulnerabilities and challenges that may limit progress within the competitive sport context. It can promote understanding of interpersonal strengths and weaknesses by identifying barriers that may prevent exceptional personal development and performance accomplishments.

Fast and accessible Tandem can deliver rapid results to remove obstacles to performance success that may be created by lack of mutual trust and respect, commitment to one another, as well as co-operation and complementary roles. It includes key relational properties that can be employed to improve relationship quality, satisfaction and performance. It can further assist with effectively managing others as well as handling conflict and change in a manner that achieves a desired result.

What are the aims of Tandem?

Tandem aims to profile the effectiveness of relationships developed between coaches and athletes regardless of sport, age, gender, experience, qualifications and so on. Profiling the coach-athlete relationship at an individual or team level helps to

(a) better understand the current state of the relationship or a number of relationships (diagnosis)

(b) appreciate the potential of the relationship/s over time (prognosis) and

(c) highlight ways to develop and maintain a positive sporting environment (education) that is both fulfilling and successful.

The tool recognises that the people comprising the squad/team are at the heart of sport coaching. Consequently, one main objective is to get to the heart of team issues and group dynamics by identifying interpersonal strengths and weaknesses.
